It’s not always easy to benchmark your developer relations plans. Getting together at a developer relations conference or meet-up is often the only chance we get to network.

For the past five years, though, WIP have carried out a survey of dev rel professionals and they’ve just released the results from the most recent edition. Here’s some of what we learn from the responses given:

  • most dev rel teams sit in either an engineering or marketing department
  • product use  is the most common metric, followed by volume of content created
  • two thirds of dev rel programmes have no champion or MVP programme
  • events, social media and content are the most important outreach channels
  • 50% of respondents segment their developer targets by language or vertical, 15% don’t segment at all
  • $100k-$150k is the mode salary range reported.
